Jim James @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

While sharing center stage wIth his signature Flying V in a stand, Jim James danced, crooned and owned the stage at the Music Hall of Williamsburg last night in Brooklyn. The near two-hour set started out with a spiritual and truly mind-blowing performance of his new record Regions Of Light And Sound of God in its entirety. In addition to his pristine vocal sermon, he cruised his share of shredding guitar mantras and sax solos while quieting the crowd with his fingerpicking acoustic.

After thanking the audience for coming to their fourth performance as a touring band before hitting the bigger venues, the encore sealed the deal with a best of the best encore of five My Morning Jacket songs including “Wonderful” and “Wordless Chorus.” A surprise appearance by My Morning Jacket’s Tom Blankenship brought down the house. Blankenship took the stage and helped tear through a “is that an SP-404 around his neck?” version of “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2” and ended with a thunderous rendition of “Victory Dance.” Don’t say it often but truly couldn’t ask for anything more. Questlove and Trudy Campbell (Allison Brie) bounced their heads in approval from the side of the small Music Hall stage in equal approval.
