MP3: “Oh You (Christmas Blues)” by LCD Soundsystem

james_murphyLCD Soundsystem (aka James Murphy) looks to follow-up 2007’s Sound of Silver with easily the most anticipated album (yet untitled) of 2010.  Sound of Silver served as Murphy’s magnum opus and was one of the most critically-acclaimed records of last decade. With all the anticipation and expectations, it will be nearly impossible to top that success. However, Murphy brags that the new album is better than the last two. If this is true, fans will not know what to do with themselves this summer.  The album is due on May 18th. In the meantime, Murphy also produced the soundtrack for the Ben Stiller/Noah Baumbach comedy, Greenberg. The soundtrack features several original LCD Soundsystem songs, one of which is circulating the music blogisphere. The song is not derivative of LCD Soundsystem’s usual incorporation of dance elements; instead, Murphy does his best David Gilmour impersonation in this bluesy rock tune. If the song is any indication of what fans can expect from future releases, then Murphy was not just bragging. asbhCourtesy of our good friend nyctaper, we’re able to share a great live performance of the track “Attic Lights” by Bradford Cox’s (Deerhunter) solo moniker, Atlas Sound. The early part of the show was hampered by a failing looping sampler, but Cox continued on in gracious fashion to play a stunning version of this song from his 2009 Logos album (#6 on Fishpork’s “favorite albums of 2009″ list). MP3: New Track From The Knife: “Colouring Of Pigeons”

tomorrowinayear_press2_new1The Knife announced plans to release the studio version of the music they scored for the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, on the 1st March 2010 in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock.  Olof and Karin wrote the music for the Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma’s opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species.’

They have released their first track free for mailing list subscribers and can be  downloaded here: “Colouring Of Pigeons”

Read the full details from their press release including track list below.

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.

‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins’s gene trees have formed the basis of some of the musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin’s loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.

Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. Described as “shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap”, further performances of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.

Olof Dreijer says: “At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera. We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”

MP3: “When I Get Home” by Vic Chesnutt (Bradford Cox tribute)

bradFor the second year in a row, Bradford Cox played a New Year’s Eve show as Atlas Sound in his hometown of Atlanta. This year he played mostly off of his excellent Logos release. The set started off with a tribute to Vic Chesnutt who passed away on Christmas after a successful suicide attempt. Bradford apologized for not being the guitarist that Vic was and admitted he couldn’t learn the song because it was too complex, so he just played the original for the audience. jonsi-boy-mp3_210xSigur Ros frontman Jonsi Birgisson’s first track off of his forthcoming solo album is called “Boy Lilikoi.” The song features string arrangements by Nico Muhly. Instead of singing in Icelandic or made-up Sigur Ros gibberish, the lyrics are in English. If this song is any indication of how good the solo effort will be, Sigur Ros fans have much to look forward to. I just hope this doesn’t end up in 100 movie trailers like other Sigur Ros songs:

up-christalyorlg-300x233Using his new Terrible Records label and CANT solo moniker, Grizzly Bear mastermind Chris Taylor puts his spin on The Notwist’s “Boneless” from their 2008 LP. Although not as brilliant as Panda Bear’s take on the song last year, both of the remixes are better than the original.
