MP3: “Stranger In The Window” by Elf Power
Elf Power follow up 2008’s In A Cave, one of my favorite albums in recent memory, with their tenth (and self-titled) album. Their Dark Developments collaboration with recently deceased Vic Chestnutt has obvious influences here. A new Orange Twin release always holds out hope for a Jeff Mangum contribution as well. The album is due in September. You can download “Stranger In the Window” by Elf Power here or stream it below:

Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Mira Aroyo To Start Supergroup

Trent Reznor’s been talking about doing a project featuring a female vocalist for years. And he’s made no secret about his love for Ladytron, inviting them to open for his 2007 European tour. Reznor announced this morning via his Twitter account that Mira Aroyo will sing on the majority of his next release. In bigger news, the release will not be a Nine Inch Nails record, and Billy Corgan has already co-written several tracks with Reznor. Reznor, who is seen throwing baseballs at a target of Billy Corgan’s head in his 2000 video for “Starfuckers” says the feud has long been over. “I’ve apologized to Billy about some of the harsh things I’ve said over the years. I’m sober these days. Those were jealous, angry demons. You don’t need me to tell you that Billy Corgan is one of the most talented artists of the last 20 years.”
Corgan, who recently co-wrote a new song for Jessica Simpson, says he has similar goals via a recent interview with Paste magazine. “I’m sure people can agree that I’ve never had the greatest voice to listen to,” Corgan says. “This project gives me an opportunity to work with two people I’ve admired for quite some time. Mira’s voice can bring world peace. ” The trio are calling themselves SLANT (yes, it’s in italics) and plan to release a record sometime in the Fall. A teaser for the first single was posted to NIN.com last night at midnight here.

Sigur Ros recently announced they would be going on hiatus to work on solo projects. Lead singer Jonsi offers his second side project (following last year’s Jonsi and Alex album) with the release of Go. His first solo offering resembles Sigur Ros, but Jonsi explores more positive themes and upbeat compositions on Go. The album was released on March 22. If you haven’t bought it yet, NPR is streaming the 40+ minute record in its entirety (here). Jonsi just wrapped up weeks of preparation for his tour, which will include two NYC stops. We’ll see you there!
Jeff Mangum To Play Benefit Show In NYC!
I was originally not going to post this in a selfish attempt to preserve as many tickets for the sale date as possible. I can only assume this May 6th Chris Knox benefit show at Le Poisson Rouge will sell out with the news that Jeff Mangum is making an unheard of appearance. The word is that Mangum will play a short acoustic set. Many of us have conceded that we would continue on with our lives never being able to see Jeff perform live, as the not-even-40-year-old indie rock icon remained a recluse. I guess the only question left to ask is: how much will I pay to see my all-time favorite musician for the first (and probably the last) time ever? Tix go on sale March 30 at Kickstarter.com.
UPDATE (03.30.10): The show sold out in 20 minutes. Fishpork will be there!

MP3: New Track From The Knife: “Colouring Of Pigeons”

The Knife announced plans to release the studio version of the music they scored for the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, on the 1st March 2010 in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock. Olof and Karin wrote the music for the Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma’s opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species.’
They have released their first track free for mailing list subscribers and can be downloaded here: “Colouring Of Pigeons”
Read the full details from their press release including track list below.
Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.
‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins’s gene trees have formed the basis of some of the musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin’s loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.
Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. Described as “shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap”, further performances of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.
Olof Dreijer says: “At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera. We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”
