Deacon from Animal Collective Plays First Solo Show

Josh Dibb better known as Deacon (formerly Deakin) from Animal Collective played his first solo show on January 1st in Baltimore. The website bmoremusic.net has posted some pics and links to MP3s of his set. The songs definitely have an Animal Collective feel but highlights what Deacon contributes to the Pre-MPP records. See the links below for MP3s and more:

Video: More Unreleased Jeff Mangum
As the week started with the digital release of a new Jeff Mangum track on the Chris Knox tribute record, why not end the week with more unreleased video of Jeff playing in April 1998. This time he treats the audience to one of my favorite bootleg tracks “Sailing Through” from the cassette tape dubbed Beauty that is still available on most of the bittorrent sites that are still up and running.
Like the other videos that have been popping up, Jeff hold back no emotion on this live version of “Sailing Though” that then goes directly into “Two-Headed Boy Part 2″ in this 9+ minutes of musical ecstasy. This might be one of the only videos of him performing rarely-played song at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, CA. Thanks goes out to defgav for the post. Its been a good week.
New Jeff Mangum on Tribute Compilation!
A few months ago it was announced that Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind and current recluse Jeff Mangum would perform a cover song for the upcoming CD for recent stroke victim, Chris Knox. Knox is known for bringing the punk and alternative music scenes to New Zealand. The compilation is a double-CD release, and Mangum is featured on disc 2. Stroke: Songs For Chris Knox will be released in various formats on February 23.
The even better news is that you can hear a 30-second clip of the song here!
MP3: “Round Again (featuring Jeff Mangum)” by Circulatory System
The Earth stops spinning when news of new music by Jeff Mangum hits the indie music blogosphere. As promised by Circulatory System frontman Will Cullen Hart, their new album features contributions from the Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind. He plays drums on this. No, we don’t get to hear his voice, but this does hint that he’s putting his reclusive past behind him and digging in with his creative heals. And let me say that the new track is repeat-worthy. You can download “Round Again (featuring Jeff Mangum)” by Circulatory System here or stream it below:

Amazon Previews Atlas Sound’s Logos
If you stroll over to Amazon.com, you can search and find a page for the digital download of Atlas Sound’s highly anticipated sophomore album Logos, which is due to release on October 19 on Kranky. The page includes short previews of the albums eleven tracks. The track listing is somewhat different than the version that Bradford Cox accidentally leaked last Fall on his Deerhunter blog. The early Amazon page leads one to believe that the album is set to leak any day. If it does, make sure you support a great musical talent. Until then, the previews from Amazon indicate that Logos will surpass the critical acclaim that Bradford’s first solo effort received early last year. Here’s the link to the Amazon album previews. Radiohead Release New Digital Single
Radiohead released a new track called “Harry Patch (In Memory Of) today via their deadairspace website . The song was inspired by an interview with Harry Patch from a few years back that had a profound effect on Yorke. Harry Patch died at the age of 111 and was the last remaining UK veteran of WWI. They recorded the song just a few weeks before his death. It is available for download for £1 (around $1.70), with all proceeds going to a UK veterans’ charity. It can also be streamed via the BBC.
Here’s the full post from Thom:
Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor. It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget. As Harry himself said
“Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims”.To peace and understanding.

Grizzly Bear Visits AOL’s The Interface
I’m not sure how a band could receive any more buzz this side of White Lies, but the increasing exposure to Grizzly Bear and their terrible Veckatimest continues. A few weeks ago, the fellas stopped by The Spinner via AOL Music. Here are some videos from those performances:

Live Stream of Amanda Palmer Play Tonight
Over the last two months, Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) has been rehearsing with her old high school’s drama department and theater director. The production is called With The Needle That Sings In Her Heart and is inspired by the Neutral Milk Hotel masterpiece “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.” It’s not completely certain what Palmer’s role is, but from the information gathered it looks like she will be both playing music for and appearing in the play.
As she does often with her solo gigs, Palmer made several tickets to the show (at Lexington High School in Massachusetts) available to fans who replied to a message on Twitter. Fans in the Boston area may be lucky enough to check out the play, but for those not able to get there or acquire tickets, tonight’s production is being streamed live (see below) at 7:30pm. Palmer tweeted that Michael Pope, who directed all of the videos for Amanda Palmer’s solo record, will be directing a five-camera setup for the live stream.
Here is a short slideshow I put together of Twitpics posted by Palmer recently:
The first official review of the first performance can be read here. If you’re not up for the read, a short video giving some background on the process of creating the production can be watched below:
The live stream of With The Needle That Sings In Her Heart can be viewed tonight at www.partyontheinternet.com at 7:30pm EST.
Grizzly Bear Considers Releasing Multitracks for “Two Weeks” Mash-Ups
Ed Droste is taking a page out of Trent Reznor’s fan-friendly approach to releasing his band’s music. In a recent Tweet made by the Grizzly Bear front man, Droste comments on all the recent mashups of the band’s excellent new track, “Two Weeks,” that have been showing up all over cyberspace. He asks, “Should we just release the ’stems’ of the song into the wild and see what people come up with?” Droste seems committed to the idea, “We are 4real considering it 4soon!” I wonder how Warp Records feels about this latest development.
Here are some of the mash-ups that have popped up so far:
