MP3s: More Unheard Elliott Smith Recordings Unearthed
After last week’s surprise of Elliott Smith’s previously unreleased “Misery Let Me Down” from the WMUC lost library of his late 90′s in-studio performance, there is more. David Taylor, record librarian for WMUC, posted this update on the WMUC tumblr page:
I have spent the last couple days digitizing the MiniDisc containing Elliott Smith’s ‘96/’97(?) live performance at WMUC. It’s done and the tracks are now available for download. However, it is my regret to inform you that the MiniDisc is not the original source, nor does not contain the full performance. The new recording clocks in at around 18 minutes, 6 minutes less than the previous CD version. Furthermore, the multiple takes of “Say Yes” and “Division Day,” including “Misery Let Me Down,” are entirely missing.
There is some good news. The MiniDisc contains two tracks that are unavailable on the CD, “The Morning After” and “The Biggest Lie.” And the other tracks are now presented in higher audio quality.
We will not have a definitive version of Smith’s WMUC performance until we can find the original ADAT that it was recorded on.
Download MP3s of the 18-minute set here or get the FLAC version here. You can also stream the first song, “The Morning After,” below:
Jeff Mangum Says “Fuck, Wall Street!”
Jeff Mangum expressed his support of the Occupy Wall Street protest with a “Fuck, Wall Street” reaction to an audience member’s exclamation last night during his Monday night Paramount Theater performance in Asbury Park. Less than an hour ago, Mangum surprised protesters and the Global Revolution LiveStream feed with a 30-minute set! When his set concluded, Jeff told those in attendance, “You’re doing a beautiful fucking thing.” Check out the archived video from Livestream below:
New Neutral Milk Hotel Website Breaks the Intrawebs
All Tomorrow’s Parties shared news of a new Neutral Milk Hotel website that showcases previously unheard recordings, a brand new box set, and a new podcast series by none other than Jeff Mangum! Unsurprisingly, the site underestimated the aftershock of such an announcement and launch. If you attempt to go to www.walkingwallofwords.com, you will get the following error message: “the server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.” We’re patiently waiting for the web servers to go back up and those responsible to get things back in order. Sign me up for a box set, please!
Update: The site is now up again. And you can listen to two previously unreleased studio tracks right away!

Update: The Antlers Play Burst Apart In Its Entirety @ SXSW (update)
The Brooklyn-based trio have been announced as headliners at an NPR showcase at The Parish in Austin on March 17. The SXSW event will also be streamed live by NPR and will feature The Antlers playing their untitled and unreleased new album in its entirety. If this doesn’t sound like the potential highlight of this year’s SXSW Festival, I don’t know what does. You can read more about NPR’s coverage of the festival here.
UPDATE: You can listen to The Antler’s live performance of Burst Apart (with trumpet) from earlier today here.
UPDATE #2: NPR has a full video of the performance up at their site. Watch is here.
Atlas Sound Releases 41 49 Tracks In Three Four Days
Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox is hands down the most prolific songwriter of this generation. In addition to releasing a Deerhunter and Atlas Sound record each year (it’s actually seven albums in less than six years), Cox continues to share additional music on his blog. The only difference between these tracks and what other bands may categorize as demos or leftovers is the fact that most of what he shares is studio-worthy. This week, Bradford was especially generous for the Thanksgiving season, releasing three volumes of Atlas Sound tracks. He’s calling them Bedroom Databank Vol. 1, 2, and 3. The tally so far is 41 songs, and who knows if tomorrow will bring more. All three volumes are worth your time (haven’t skipped one track yet) and can be downloaded for free here. Get a taste of “Mona Lisa” from today’s Vol. 3 below. Enjoy!
EDIT: Cox posted Vol. 4 yesterday. Could there be a Vol. 5?
New Deerhunter Leaks; Band To Host Video Chat Tonight
It’s probably no coincidence that Bradford Cox announced today via Facebook that he would be hosting a live video chat with Lockett Pundt tonight at 10pm EST, the same day the band’s new record leaks. According to the Yowie program description, Bradford will provide some context on Deerhunter’s highly anticipated fourth studio album, Halcyon Digest, due out September 28 on 4AD. You can check out the video chat here later tonight. By the way … if you decide to download the leak, make sure you buy a copy on vinyl, go to a show or support the band in some way. Great artists deserve to be paid for their art.

MP3: “Stranger In The Window” by Elf Power
Elf Power follow up 2008′s In A Cave, one of my favorite albums in recent memory, with their tenth (and self-titled) album. Their Dark Developments collaboration with recently deceased Vic Chestnutt has obvious influences here. A new Orange Twin release always holds out hope for a Jeff Mangum contribution as well. The album is due in September. You can download “Stranger In the Window” by Elf Power here or stream it below:
Jeff Mangum To Play Benefit Show In NYC!
I was originally not going to post this in a selfish attempt to preserve as many tickets for the sale date as possible. I can only assume this May 6th Chris Knox benefit show at Le Poisson Rouge will sell out with the news that Jeff Mangum is making an unheard of appearance. The word is that Mangum will play a short acoustic set. Many of us have conceded that we would continue on with our lives never being able to see Jeff perform live, as the not-even-40-year-old indie rock icon remained a recluse. I guess the only question left to ask is: how much will I pay to see my all-time favorite musician for the first (and probably the last) time ever? Tix go on sale March 30 at Kickstarter.com. UPDATE (03.30.10): The show sold out in 20 minutes. Fishpork will be there!
Deacon from Animal Collective Plays First Solo Show

Josh Dibb better known as Deacon (formerly Deakin) from Animal Collective played his first solo show on January 1st in Baltimore. The website bmoremusic.net has posted some pics and links to MP3s of his set. The songs definitely have an Animal Collective feel but highlights what Deacon contributes to the Pre-MPP records.
