Nine Inch Nails may be on temporary hiatus, but a sober Trent Reznor seems to have found time to make a contribution to Q Magazine’s 20th anniversary tribute compilation of U2′s Achtung Baby between an upcoming full-length How To Destroy Angels record and the score to David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (due in December). The track is mellow, atmospheric and features an impressive vocal delivery from Trent (yes, really). Atticuss Ross co-produced and programmed the track. Trent Reznor took to Twitter today to inform fans on the update to David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo website, which most likely features a track from Trent’s new collaborative score with Atticus Ross. As with last year’s Academy Award-winning soundtrack for The Social Network, the experience of listening to the tracks will work best in the context of watching the film. In the meantime, you can check out the droning composition at www.dragontattoo.com.
Album Review: Volcanic Sunlight
Some reviews have called Saul William’s latest effort, Volcanic Sunlight, a misstep. I’d call it more of a sidestep and would argue that it’s his bravest, if not best, release to date. The Trent Reznor-produced The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust was my favorite album of 2007. With hints that the record incorporated mostly leftover compositions from Reznor’s previous works, one might have expected a disconnect between the music and Saul’s vocals. There was none, and the Trent/Saul collaboration was lightning in a bottle. For Volcanic Sunlight, Saul Williams uprooted himself, made Paris his new home, and got rid of some past demons. Williams has said in interviews that he’s freed himself of a lot of his past rage: “I think I’ve exorcised a lot of my anger through my music in the past, whereas this time around this really just feels perfect.” [via RockFeedback]
Williams has said the album is more of a focus on the music than his vocals. I’m not sure we’re listening to the same record. This might be true on lighter, poppier tracks like “Dance” and “Girls Have More Fun,” but the slam poet still brings heavy lyrics, via both singing and spoken word. Without the production and programming previously provided by Reznor, Williams seems to be open to exploring pop and dance music. I suppose this is what is throwing off some other reviews. Maybe Saul has figured out something we have yet to and is celebrating his new-found revelations. Standout tracks “Triumph” and “Fallup,” as well as the first single “Dance,” sound celebratory in nature. “Triumph” breaks new ground for Williams. The chorus features a pure musical liturgy that embodies Saul’s increasing sense of hope. “Fall Up” is one of the calmest tracks Saul has written and encompasses a slow-tempo R&B composition. “Patience” and “Give It Up” resemble the intensity of much of Williams’ past discography and make Volcanic Sunlight Saul’s most diverse, yet cohesive, work yet. Fresh off his Academy Award win for Fincher’s The Social Network, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score the director’s next project, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, due in theaters on Christmas 2011. I’m not sure any collaboration is more anticipated this year, especially after the results of their last project. Exhibit A is the new red band trailer released in Europe this week. It features a cover song of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” by Trent Reznor with Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) on vocals. Watch a bootleg version below:
UPDATED: the high quality green band trailer was finally released this week:
Saul Williams Releases Dance Record
Without much press here in the US, Saul Williams released Volcanic Sunlight yesterday via Sony France. The album is his fourth and first since 2007′s Trent Reznor-produced The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust. Williams moved to Paris last year to record the demos for the record and says this is the first album he’s released where the music, not the words is the centerpiece (via www.saulwilliams.com). On first listen, the album is an absolute revelation. Today, the new video for album standout “Dance” was shared via William’s Twitter account (sorry, no embed option). The previously released video for “Explain My Heart” is embedded below:

Following their surprising win at the Golden Globes, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are now the favorites at this year’s Academy Awards for Best Original Score for The Social Network. The awards are given out on February 27, 2011. If you haven’t seen the movie or heard the soundtrack, you have no idea what you are missing. The Social Network was the best film of 2010. The Fishpork 20: Favorite Albums of 2010
We’re wondering if the end-of-the-year list makers have actually listened to Sufjan’s Steven’s The Age of Adz more than once (or even at all). It’s truly and unquestionably our favorite release for 2010. While we enjoyed some of the popular choices (This Is Happening, Halcyon Digest, The Suburbs, etc.) just as much as the next guy, there were some less popular albums that we really appreciated over the past 12 months (Down There, DISCO2, Shame, Shame). And is there any reason why a soundtrack cannot get some love? Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross may be the reason why The Social Network wins a Best Picture Oscar this year! Here are our favorite 20 albums of a tremendous year for music:
1. Sufjan Stevens – The Age of Adz
2. LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
3. Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles II
4. Caribou – Swim
5. The National – High Violet
6. Avey Tare – Down There
7. Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest
8. Owen Pallett – Heartland
9. HEALTH – DISCO2
10. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
11. Yeasayer – Odd Blood
12. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – The Social Network
13. Jonsi – Go
14. Dr. Dog – Shame, Shame
15. Girl Talk – All Day
16. Vampire Weekend – Contra
17. The Magnetic Fields – Realism
18. Holy Fuck – Latin
19. The Walkmen – Lisbon
20. Gorillaz – Plastic Beach
Honorable Mention:
Seven Fields of Aphelion – Periphery
Most Disappointing Albums of 2010:
Elf Power – Elf Power
MGMT – Congratulations
Of Montreal – False Priest
Trent Reznor Nominated For Golden Globe

Today’s Golden Globe nominations revealed that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score for David Fincher’s near-perfect The Social Network was nominated for “Best Original Score.” This is Reznor’s first Golden Globes nod, although he has twelve Grammy nominations with two wins (for 1992′s “Wish” and 1995′s “Happiness in Slavery (Live)”). It’s uncertain if the Academy Awards will figure out that the soundtrack contains a brilliantly re-worked version of “35 Ghost IV” from 2008′s Ghosts I-IV that is cleverly titled “A Familiar Taste.” Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) was disqualified from a potential Oscar nomination for his There Will Be Blood score for a similar reason in 2007.
